Train the other ninety percent
Your puzzle rating is going up. Your games aren't.
A puzzle tells you there is something to find. A real position doesn't. OptiChess trains what happens the rest of the time — judging a quiet position, choosing between plans, and knowing when there is nothing there.
Real positions from real games, plus the classic endgames. Progress measured by speed, mistakes and consistency.
Chess strength isn't one number
Two players rated 1400 can have completely different problems. One calculates well and drifts positionally; the other judges a position accurately and hangs pieces. The same rating, and nothing in common.
OptiChess rates each skill separately, so when progress stalls you can see where — and getting stronger means getting rounder, not just bigger.
How it works
- Start training. No account needed to begin. Say what you already know — simple tactics, basic endgames, an opening repertoire — and you'll start at the right level straight away.
- Get a clean daily session. A mix of all nine kinds of question below, from tactics to blindfold lines, set at your level. Every answer comes with an explanation.
- Measure progress and adapt. Track speed and mistakes so the system can focus training where you need it most.
What you train
- Tactics. Find the winning combination, from positions where someone missed it.
- Who's better? Judge a position before you calculate: winning, better, equal or worse.
- Choosing a plan. Pick the right plan for the position, then play the move that starts it.
- What's the threat? See what your opponent wants to do before they do it.
- Blunder check. Does that capture or check actually win anything? Learn to tell before you play it.
- Pawn structure. Find the outposts and the weak pawns, the targets a plan is built on.
- Endgames. Won, drawn or lost? Then find the move that keeps it, with the idea explained.
- Only moves. One move holds the position and everything else loses. Find the one that saves the game.
- Blindfold lines. The moves are written out, not played. Picture where they lead and find the move at the end.
